2023 Mazda CX-90: What We Know So Far

It’s been a while since we figured out that Mazda is going upscale. The new platform has been developed and should make this Japanese manufacturer a genuine premium brand. Therefore, it’s quite logical that our expectations from the 2023 Mazda CX-90, which will be the new flagship model, are huge. It will replace the current CX-9 and it will be the most prestigious model in the company’s future lineup.

Based on the new platform, the new CX-90 will bring so many interesting design solutions. From what we know so far, all-wheel drive will be standard, while the power will come from longitudinally mounted engines. Furthermore, it will also come in a plug-in hybrid version. Naturally, the new model will also bing a completely new design, more elegant and more attractive than ever. The same is expected from the new interior, which should also offer more passenger and cargo space.

The all-new 2023 Mazda CX-90 could arrive already by the end of this year.

2023 Mazda CX-90 Design

The 2023 Mazda CX-90 will replace the current-generation CX-9 and it will bring all kinds of novelties. First of all, it will ride on the company’s new platform. The new architecture features longitudinally-mounted engines and a rear-wheel-drive layout, though the latest reports suggest that all CX-90 models will come standard with all-wheel drive. From what we can hear, the Japanese manufacturer will offer an even more advanced suspension setup, which should improve both comfort and handling.

At this point, we don’t know details about the size, but we presume that the 2023 Mazda CX-90 could come with slightly bigger dimensions compared to the outgoing CX-9. We count on a longer wheelbase, which would ensure more space on the inside, which is arguably one of the weakest points of the outgoing model.

Interior

As we’ve just mentioned, the biggest drawback of the current model is the lack of cabin space. This particularly refers to the third row, which is really tight, as well as to the cargo area, which is pretty small for a mid-size SUV. These things should be fixed with the new 2023 Mazda CX-90, considering that we are about to see a longer wheelbase and bigger overall dimensions.

Of course, more space won’t be the only novelty to come with the next generation. We also count on a completely new dashboard design. The current model already looks very stylish and very luxurious, but the new model should bring everything to the next level. This refers to both aesthetics and quality. The new materials should be even nicer, while the build quality should be even more impressive. Naturally, we also count on lots of new tech features.

2023 Mazda CX-90 Engines

The powertrain department will certainly be one of the most interesting aspects of the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-90. As we’ve just mentioned, the new platform will bring an RWD layout, longitudinally-mounted engines and many other upgrades. Among big novelties, we will also see completely new engines. The first one to mention is the new inline-six gasoline engine with 3.0 liters in displacement. From what we know so far, the new engine will come in two variants. Base versions will feature a naturally-aspirated version of the engine, while the upgrade will come in the form of a turbocharger. The exact numbers are still to come. Another important novelty will be a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Besides the gasoline powertrain, the new 2023 Mazda CX-90 will also come in the PHEV version. We count on the same setup we can find in the CX-60. That system uses a 2.5-liter inline-four engine in a combination with a 134-horsepower electric motor. The combined output goes up to 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Also, the system includes a 17.8-kWh battery pack, which provides up to 39 miles of the all-electric range in the CX-60.
