2023 Hybrid Pickup Trucks: Ultimate Guide

Automotive electrification is in a big swing these days and that doesn’t refer to passenger cars only. Even commercial and working vehicles, such as pickup trucs are starting a new era, with a more environment-friendly powertrain. Electric pickups are the future but what about the present? The present is reserved for hybrid powertrains. There are already a few models with such a powertrain on offer, while several more are about to come in the near future.

We present you the list of 2023 Hybrid Pickups, which includes both the current and the upcoming models with an electrified powertrain. Keep in mind that both full-size and compact pickups are included in our list.

Ford F-150 Hybrid

2023 Ford F-150 Hybrid

The last year’s redesign of the world’s best-selling pickup has brought a lot of novelties and the new, hybrid powertrain is among the biggest ones. This is the first pickup that features a full hybrid powertrain and the benefits of such a setup can already be seen.

Other than the powertrain, things are pretty much the same as in standard F-150 models. On the other hand, the hybrid system is based on a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which gets help from a 47-hp electric motor. As a result, the max output goes up to a pretty respectable 430 horsepower and an impressive 570 pound-feet of torque.

As a result, the max towing capacity goes up to 12.700 pounds, which is on par with traditional pickups of the same class. At the same time, fuel economy is way superior and goes around 24 miles per gallon in a combined ride. The max payload capacity goes around 2.120 pounds.

At this point, the F-150 Hybrid is available only in a SuperCrew cab layout, with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. The starting price goes around 43.000 dollars.

Ram 1500 eTorque

2023 RAM 1500 eTorque

Unlike the arch rival from the blue oval company, the Ram 1500 still doesn’t use a genuine hybrid system. Instead, it uses a 48-Volt mild-hybrid system, known as eTorque. This system can be coupled with two of the available engines. The first one is the base 3.6-liter V6, which puts out 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque.

The other engine available with the eTorque system is a 5.7-liter V8, with a max output of 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. In both cases, this mild-hybrid system doesn’t increase power output, but it has a positive impact on fuel economy and emission. Furthermore, it also makes the ride smoother.

The current generation of Ram’s half-ton pickup has been around since 2019 and if we can trust the latest reports, the 2023 Ram 1500 will probably receive a mid-cycle update. We expect to see visual changes, as well as more features. Some sources also speculate about the possible plug-in hybrid version. The officials are still quiet on this matter.

The Ram 1500 with eTorque is available already at around 30.000 dollars.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid

2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid

The new generation of a super-reliable pickup truck is one of the most anticipated models for the next year. It will be redesigned after a full 13 years and, logically, we will see tons of changes. The pickup will be improved in every aspect and among other novelties, big things are coming under the hood as well.

The old V8 will be replaced with a turbo V6, but we also count on a hybrid version. The details are still to come but rumors suggest a pretty capable powertrain. Allegedly, we should see an improved version of a familiar system that is based on a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which can be found in numerous Lexus models. If we can trust unofficial reports, the new system will feature a max output of around 450 horsepower and over 500 pound-feet of torque. At the same time, we can hear stories about 27 miles per gallon in a combined ride, which sounds more than amazing.

Other than the new powertrain, the next-generation Tundra will come with all kinds of other novelties. There is a completely new platform, which will significantly improve ride quality. Also, the company has prepared a new suspension setup and besides higher comfort, the new truck will also offer much better towing capacity. Some sources speculate about 13.000 pounds for the most capable versions.

The next-generation Tundra will hit the market in late 2021, while the hybrid model is expected sometime in 2022. We estimate that the hybrid version will go around 45.000 dollars.

Ford Maverick Hybrid

2023 Ford Maverick

The compact pickup segment is becoming more and more popular and the buyers’ structure now includes a much wider range of driver profiles. These pickups are also popular among drivers who like the pickup body style but don’t necessarily need exceptional capabilities. For them, unibody pickup trucks are the best choice.

One of the newest additions for this sub-segment is Ford Maverick. This small pickup is based on the Ford Escape, so we may expect a similar driving experience, which is excellent with this small crossover. The two models will share many parts, including the powertrain.

This means that we may also expect a hybrid version of the new Maverick. The new pickup will use a system based on a 2.5-liter inline-four engine, with a combined output of 191 horsepower. The system is coupled with a CVT transmission, which should ensure the highest possible efficiency. We expect that the Maverick Hybrid will be able to reach 40 mpg in the city ride.

The price will definitely be one of Maverick’s strong selling points, as base versions will go under $22.000.

Jeep Gladiator 4xe

2023 Jeep Gladiator 4xe

After the recent launch of the Wrangler 4xe, we strongly believe that the same powertrain will be offered for the Gladiator in the near future. That could be already for the 2023 Jeep Gladiator, which should receive a mid-cycle refresh. At this point, the officials are still quiet, so take this with a reserve.

If it arrives, we are pretty sure that the Gladiator plug-in hybrid will feature the same setup as its SUV sibling. That would mean a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four engine, which comes in pair with two electric motors and a pretty big 14.0-kWh battery pack. The total output goes up to 375 horsepower, which promises strong performance in all aspects.

The large battery should also provide good autonomy. For reference, the Wrangler 4xe can make up to 21 miles in the all-electric mode, while the fuel economy goes up to 49 mpg. We may expect similar ratings from the Gladiator.

At this point, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator 4xe is yet to be confirmed. If it arrives, it won’t be cheap. The starting price should go around  50.000 dollars.

Hyundai Santa Cruz Hybrid

2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz N Render

Hyundai has just entered the pickup segment with the model called Santa Cruz. The new model initially came with two gasoline engine options on the offer. Still, we expect that hybrid versions will come soon, maybe already for the 2023 model year.

We know what to expect from such versions, as Hyundai has just developed a new hybrid powertrain, which debuted in the new Tucson. The system is based on a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, which comes in pair with an electric motor, for a total output of 221 horsepower. The average fuel economy would go over 30 miles per gallon.

We also count on a plug-in hybrid version of the pickup. That system uses the same gasoline engine but comes with a more powerful electric motor and a combined output of 265 horsepower. This version would also feature a much bigger battery, which would ensure a decent all-electric range. For reference, the same setup ensures 33 miles in the EV mode in the new Tucson.

The starting price would probably go around 30.000 dollars, while the PHEV would cost a little bit more.
