The SUV market is constantly growing and even the competition between full-size SUVs is getting tougher. In the segment where a production cycle lasts no more than 6-7 years, the current Sequoia looks like a real dinosaur. The current generation has been around for a full 13 years and it desperately needs an update. Despite the rumors, it looks like this won’t happen so soon. Moreover, the next generation probably won’t come before the next year, which clearly indicates no bigger changes for the 2022 Toyota Sequoia. Most likely, this will be a typical carryover model.
This means you may count on an SUV that may feel outdated in many aspects but still has a plethora of great things to offer. We like its rugged nature and exceptional reliability, while the cabin is also among the biggest in the class. On the other side, the interior obviously shows its aged look, while the good-old V8 engine makes Sequoia the thirstiest vehicle in the class. We expect that the 2022 Toyota Sequoia will hit the market sometime late in the year.
2022 Toyota Sequoia Design
When it comes to base design characteristics, this model is a part of Toyota’s pack that has been introduced way back in 2008. While some of the models, like Tundra, are about to get a full redesign this year, this one will have to wait for its turn. According to the latest reports, the current iteration will remain in production for another year. That means that the 2022 Toyota Sequoia will come with familiar design characteristics.
The last time we saw updates on this full-size SUV was three years ago. Also, the TRD Pro model came a couple of years ago, with lots of off-road hardware. The last year’s model came with a new visual package, so we may see something similar from the 2022 Toyota Sequoia as well. At this point, the officials are still quiet.
Interior
This is probably the aspect where Sequoia shows its age most. Compared to rivals, it looks like it came from another era. Simply, the dashboard looks archaic and, more importantly, it features much lower overall quality compared to younger rivals like Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe. Most of the cabin features low-rent plastics, so typical for models that were produced 15 years ago.
On the other side, the thing that isn’t so bad is the amount of space. This SUV is pretty generous when it comes to the passenger room. All three rows accommodate adults with ease, while the total seating capacity goes up for seven. The cargo area is as impressive. You may count on about 18.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 66.6 behind the second, and a total of 120.1, which are still some of the highest ratings in the class.
Features
We don’t expect to see too many changes in terms of standard and available equipment. Most of the things are about to remain the same, so the 2022 Sequoia should come standard with goodies like tri-zone climate control, keyless entry, a 7-inch touch screen, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, an eight-speaker stereo, three USB ports, and Bluetooth. Additionally, you can get navigation, a stereo with 12 or 14 speakers, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch display.
When it comes to safety, the current model comes standard with goodies like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.
2022 Toyota Sequoia Engine
Under the hood, the 2022 Toyota Sequoia will continue with a good-old 5.7-liter V8 engine. This is a well-known unit, which proved itself as one of the most reliable and most durable in the business. Also, it has plenty of power. In this case, you may count on about 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The power is sent via 6-speed automatic transmission, which may not be the most refined unit around but does a pretty good job. The whole setup moves this huge SUV with ease. It’s not particularly fast but it runs with authority.
On the other side, the obvious drawback of this powertrain is fuel economy. You may count on probably the lowest ratings in the class. In numbers, that would be around 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.
2022 Toyota Sequoia Release Date and Price
This should be the last production year of the current generation. Therefore, we expect to see it come in a typical time of year, sometime in the last quarter of 2021. Also, the price should remain pretty much the same. The current model starts at around 49.000 dollars and we don’t expect that the base 2022 Toyota Sequoia could cost much higher.
