2022 Toyota Fortuner Preview: Changes, Specs, Price

After the last year’s facelift, we believe that the current generation of Toyota’s rugged SUV can remain in production for a few more years. We also believe that the 2022 Toyota Fortuner will probably feature no bigger changes. The current generation has been around since 2015 and still has a lot of things to show. This is a genuine SUV, with lots of off-road potentials and the recent update has made it more attractive and even more capable.

So, you may count on the same overall design, which is based on the legendary Hilux. This SUV is capable, but also accommodates three rows of seats, making it perfect for families. Also, there is an updated turbodiesel engine with more power and torque, while Toyota also offers some older-generation engines in certain markets. Speaking of the markets, this SUV is available in Australia, India, South East Asia, Russia etc.

Since there are no significant changes to come for the next year, we believe it will hit the market sometime late in the year.

When it comes to base design characteristics, it’s important to know that this SUV is based on the legendary Hilux pickup. Therefore, we are talking about a genuine, fully framed SUV, which has plenty of off-road potential. Still, there are few mechanical tweaks that make it more civilized compared to the pickup sibling. For example, the suspension setup is different and instead of leaf springs, this SUV comes with independent multi-ling suspension, which ensures better driving characteristics and higher level of comfort. What’s also worth mentioning are the brakes. Things may vary in this aspect from market to market. In India and other Asian countries, you will find drum brakes on the rear wheels. On the other side, the Australian model uses disc brakes.

When it comes to the styling, the last year’s update has brought a couple of interesting novelties. There is a new front end, which looks notably nice than before, thanks to new headlights, grille and more. Also, there is the new Legender trim level, which is characterized by a couple of exclusive styling details, with the distinctive front end, unique wheels, color options etc.

For the next year, we don’t expect to see any particular changes, though minor updates like new color options are always possible.

Interior

The interior design won’t change for the next year and you may count on a familiar layout. The dashboard looks very similar to the one in Hilux, featuring the same aesthetical solutions and similar tech goodies. It looks very car-like and even though most of it is covered with plastics, there is nothing to complain about regarding build quality. This cabin is built to last, not to impress with materials, and we are pretty sure that this cabin will ensure decades of exploitation.

Besides good build quality, this interior is also practical. It comes with three rows of seats and max seating capacity of seven. Still, keep in mind that Toyota designers didn’t want to sacrifice off-road potential, so the wheelbase is under 109 inches. That’s somewhere between compact and mid-size segments, so you won’t get the same amount of room you get in the Land Cruiser. Moreover, the third row is pretty tight by today’s standards.

2022 Toyota Fortuner Engines

Under the hood, the 2022 Toyota Fortuner will come with the recently updated 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which now features a max output of 203 horsepower (150kW) and 500Nm. It comes in pair with a six-speed automatic transmission, which does a pretty fine job as well. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but you can get a 2022 Toyota Fortuner 4×4 as well. Besides four-wheel drive, this SUV is available with all other kinds of off-road upgrades, such as locking differential, hill descent control, skid plates, off-road tires etc.

In India, you can also get a gasoline version. We are talking about a 2.7-liter inline-four, which puts out around 160 horsepower. Furthermore, you can even get a large 4.0-liter V6 on some markets, with a max output of 235 horsepower.
