2022 RAM 2500: What to Expect?

The segment of 3/4-ton pickup trucks is all about the Big Three but that doesn’t mean that the competition isn’t strong enough. Instead, the battle between three legendary trucks is tougher than ever and that’s the reason why many experts expect to see novelties in the 2022 RAM 2500. The current generation of this truck has been around for a few years and while it’s certainly superior in many aspects compared to the F-250 and Silverado 2500HD, there is still enough room for improvements. This particularly refers to mechanics, as the current diesel version still relies on a good-old 6-speed automatic transmission. For comparison, rivals use modern 10-speed units.

That’s why we expect to see changes for the next year. If we can trust the latest reports, the 2022 RAM 2500 will come with a 10-speed transmission from Allison. A few more updates are also possible. Still, keep in mind that the officials are still quiet on this matter, so take the following with a reserve.

2022 RAM 2500 Could Get Allison Transmission

As we’ve just mentioned, this could be one of the biggest novelties for the next year. Of course, we are talking about a diesel version, which currently uses a 6-speed unit from Aisin. Although a little bit old, this gearbox still does a fantastic job. It is capable, durable and reliable. While there is nothing wrong with this transmission, rivals feel more up to date. Both Ford and Chevy use 10-speed gearboxes, so the 2022 RAM 2500 might go in the same way.

If this happens, the Ram 2500 would come with the same 10-speed unit from Allison as Silverado. This is a relatively new transmission but it already proved itself as an excellent unit. With it installed, we presume that this truck would become more refined and more efficient. After all, we would expect a slightly higher max towing capacity as well. Still, keep in mind that the current model can already tow nearly 20.000 pounds.

On the other side, the gasoline model would continue in the same way. It uses a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission, which does a fantastic job.

2022 RAM 2500 Design

Without any doubt, a new transmission would be the biggest novelty for the 2022 RAM 2500. Still, we wouldn’t exclude the possibility to see a few more novelties, in terms of the overall design. While it seems early for a facelift, we presume things like new color options and packages could happen. Still, the overall layout will certainly remain the same, especially in terms of the chassis and suspension setup. This is where RAM 2500 beats the competition. It is more comfortable and better to drive in every aspect, especially if you go for an optional air suspension.

Interior and Trim Levels

The same story goes for the interior design. Compared to rivals, this cabin looks way more upscale. It looks more stylish and utilizes some really impressive materials. Of course, you would have to choose more expensive options to fully enjoy this cabin. Base models like Tradesman look relatively basic, with things like a small 5-inch touchscreen, manual accessories and vinyl upholstery. Mid-range options Big Horn and Laramie already look very nice and come with a long list of features.

Finally, you can opt for Longhorn and Limited models, which are pretty luxurious and can compete with any SUV on the market in terms of luxury and convenience.

Those who are more up to off-roading can pick the Power Wagon, which comes with a lot of unique styling details, as well as some pretty serious off-road hardware.

2022 RAM 2500 Engines

As we already mentioned, there is a chance to see a new transmission for the diesel engine. On the other side, the engine offer will remain the same. Therefore, standard models will continue with a well-known 6.4-liter gasoline V8, which puts out around 410 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The diesel model uses a well-known 6.7-liter inline-six from Cummins, which puts out around 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque.

The gasoline version can tow over 16.300 pounds, while the max payload goes a little bit over 4.000 pounds. The diesel can tow more but haul less. In numbers, the max towing capacity for a diesel goes up to 19.780 pounds, while the max payload goes up to 3.260 pounds. These numbers could change for a bit with a new transmission.

2022 RAM 2500 Release Date and Price

Whether the 2022 RAM 2500 comes with new transmission or not, we don’t believe it will hit the market much earlier than usual. Most likely, it will hit showrooms in the last quarter of the year. The current model starts at around 34.000 dollars and we don’t expect to see a bigger increase in the next year.
