The iconic G Wagen has been around for decades and just a few years ago, we saw a full redesign. For that occasion, we saw a lot of new things and the new model is a much different vehicle compared to the previous versions. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing updates in the near future. A big one is coming already for the next year, as we are about to see the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4×4 Squared. This name has always been reserved for some of the toughest versions of the G Class.
On the other hand, the rest of the lineup is about to carry on in the same way. You may count on familiar design characteristics, which are mostly about off-roading and luxury. Still, this SUV also offers a comfortable ride, an impressive level of luxury, and a long list of engines in the offer. On the other hand, the main issues are things like poor fuel economy, small cargo area etc.
2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4×4 Squared
For the next year, the biggest novelty will be the new version of the famous 4×4 Squared model. This version has always been characterized by some serious off-road upgrades and the new model shouldn’t be an exception. It will come with portal axles, a permanent four-wheel drive, a reduction transfer case, three differential locks etc. Of course, it will come with a plethora of exclusive styling details as well. Some of the things that come to mind are recognizable fender flares, as well as a custom roof rack.
When it comes to the powertrain, we presume that this model will use the same 4.0-liter V8 engine as the G550, which puts out around 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. We may see an “AMG” badged version in the offer as well, with a more potent engine.
2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Design
When it comes to base design characteristics, we definitely don’t expect to see any bigger changes. The styling hasn’t been changed for decades, though the new generation is longer and wider. Also, two-door versions are not available anymore, so the only version you can get is a 5-door version.
On the inside, the current generation offers more passenger space than before. Both rows are generous with space, though we can’t say the same for the cargo area. It offers around 38.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 68.6 cubic feet behind the front seats. That’s below average for the class.
Considering the price tag, anything but the exceptional interior quality would be a disappointment. The build quality is excellent, while the materials are impressive. Of course, you may count on plenty of leather, wood accents and other fancy things.
Features
Novelties are always possible but we are pretty sure that the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will continue mostly with the familiar features. Therefore, we expect that base models will come standard with goodies like tri-zone climate control, moonroof, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, a touchpad controller, a navigation system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, HD Radio, a 15-speaker Burmester stereo, two USB ports, and Bluetooth. The list of upgrades should include a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system with twin 10-inch displays.
When it comes to safety features, all models should come standard with goodies like a rearview camera, parallel and perpendicular park assist, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a driver attention monitor, adaptive headlights, automatic high-beam headlights etc.
Powertrain
You may count on two familiar engine options in the offer for the next year. The base G550 will continue with a 4.0-liter V8 engine, which puts out around 415 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. If you’re after something more powerful, you can get the AMG 63 version, which uses the same engine but significantly upgraded. The max output goes up to 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Both versions use the same 9-speed automatic transmission.
Obviously, driving dynamics are great but on the other hand, fuel economy is terrible. The base version returns around 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. The AMG 63 is even worse, as it returns around 13 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway.
2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Release Date and Price
We expect to see the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class sometime in the last quarter of the year. When it comes to the price, base versions should go around 132.000 dollars. Key competitors are models like Range Rover, Lexus LX, Toyota Land Cruiser etc.
